Not too impressed by this one. If you go to a BBQ joint for the atmosphere and sitting outside then this is the place. The have this open pit where the meat is kept warm but that is all for show. If you go for the meat you may be disappointed. The BBQ sauce was orange and reminded me of a dressed up Heinze 57 sauce.

We went to the Salt Lick in Round Top. This place is a GREAT place to go with the family. Great service, friendly people, you go there and have a new friend. This visit the BBQ was really very good. The moist brisket was spicy and very moist and tender, the pork rib was very good with a slight sweetness, the sausage is a true polish style which is a bit different then most other joints and very good, the only complaint was it was very salty. Overall I have been here many times with my family and always enjoy it. Great job!!

Not that impressed with salt lick anymore after all the up in comers in and around austin area. Ribs below average, brisket lacks flavor/on the drier side, sausage merely adequate. Sides stand out! Potato salad is outstanding(german style). Cole slaw good and vinegar-y. Beans good, but the sauce....incredible sauce! You can order spicy if u like also...

The image above is probably the most well-known in Texas barbecue. A photo of, or with, the iconic pit at the Salt Lick is on par with braking for our state’s bluebonnets along the highway. This particular photo fetched me nearly 3,000 likes on Instagram. My best image of a Franklin Barbecue brisket? 1,163 likes. The open pit’s flaming live oak and the tendrils of sausage hanging above mesmerizes, so much so that Salt Lick literally…

I’ve often thought that the Salt Lick is a joint that serves very respectable smoked meat, and is vastly overrated at the same time. The wait for a table on this sprawling campus of barbecue can exceed and hour, but no worries as you can enjoy drinks and live music al fresco on one of the many picnic tables provided. A visit here isn’t just about barbecue. It’s about atmosphere, catching up with friends, and…

The Salt Lick is renowned throughout Texas, and holds a special place in the heart of BBQ fanatics. Many recent reviews have decried the demise of this mecca of Texas BBQ claiming that it’s all about atmosphere, and not enough about what’s in the pits. The setting alone may be worth the drive if you come with a group of friends. The large group of picnic tables and BYOB policy make for a tailgate party…
