I know these guys catch a lot of flack for "institutional" BBQ, but I always find their moist brisket consistently yummy and really like their spicy sausage. Good prices and always friendly employees, too!

Chopped beef sandwich was below par and pork ribs were a 6.5 out of ten. Not sure how this one made the list

Asked for fatty brisket and found a few decent, moist pieces with good flavor, nice smoke ring and a well flavored bark. Most of it was just dry, though. Ribs were really dry and lacked any kind of flavor. Maybe I just caught them on a bad day...

The fire burns brightly in a brick pit out front of Heavy’s in Hondo. It’s a hulking brick pit built by the McBee family back when they opened this barbecue joint, and it’s prominent location on the front corner of the building, along with the smoke that pours out of it, is a tempting advertisement for travelers driving through town.
