Sweet Baby J’s may be a more appropriate name for this joint. The sauce was sweet, the greens were nearly candied, and the tea was downright syrupy. Even cut with half a glass of unsweet tea, this was liquid sugar that required a water chaser. The meats were spared from a dose of sugar and got a good dose of smoke instead. The brisket slices had a good crust and a decent smoke line. The…

Brisket, ribs and sausage all just mediocre.

Southern cooking mixed with BBQ. Super juicy. Great cut of meat for the brisket. Good rub, but a hint of glu. Oils on the meats are so prevalent, they almost seem fake. Diabetics beware. The employees are super sweet but so is everything else. I would eat again soon, but I need to include a slight modification to my workout plan.

I stopped by on my way home from Longview. Glad I did. Baby J and crew were hospitable and friendly upon arrival. So how was the product? In my humble opinion, the brisket was nicely prepared with a clear smoke ring, nice bark, good fat rendering and a flavor unique from central Texas 'cue. I do believe lower and slower might help with the moisture, as a few pieces were less than moist. Ribs were top notch as well.

Seriously? If you must-order the catfish. Otherwise, keep driving.

Pecan-smoked meats with dark, flavorful crusts are owner Jeremiah “Baby J” McKenzie’s game. It’s all good, so forget the sauce. Southern-style pulled pork provides a juicy wake-up call to jaded taste buds. Replace the usual sides with fried okra, turnip greens, and cornbread for a soul-food feast.
